What the system is
Plain-language answers for anyone evaluating remote monitoring for the first time.
What is a remote site monitoring system?
A remote site monitoring system is equipment installed at an unmanned location that continuously measures site conditions — power, temperature, equipment status, access — and reports them back to operators over a communications link.
It replaces physical inspection. Instead of sending a technician to check whether a battery bank is healthy or a generator has started, the system reports those conditions in real time and raises an alarm when a reading moves outside its expected range. In industrial use these controllers are often called RTUs, or remote terminal units.
What is Sentor?
Sentor is a remote monitoring and control system built for unmanned infrastructure. A Sentor controller collects analogue, digital and communications data from equipment at a site, applies programmed logic to it on site, and reports readings and alarms to operators through Sentor software.
Sentor has been supplying these systems since 1995, across telecommunications towers, utilities, government facilities, agriculture and commercial buildings.
What can Sentor monitor?
Sentor monitors anything that can be expressed as a voltage, a current, a contact closure or a temperature — which covers most site equipment.
Sensor types include temperature, smoke and fire detection, fuel level, water pressure, rotation speed, RF power couplers, ±48 VDC supplies, current, door and window contacts, motion detectors, wind, strobes and cameras. Inputs accept clean contact closures, protected loops with end-of-line resistors, 0–1 V, 0–10 V and 0–30 V analogue signals, 4–20 mA current loops, and direct temperature sensors.
Can Sentor control equipment remotely, or does it only monitor?
It controls as well as monitors. Each controller provides relay outputs that switch equipment on site, operated remotely by an operator or automatically by programmed logic.
The base controller provides eight single-pole double-throw relay outputs rated at 1 A, expandable in groups of eight to a maximum of forty. Typical uses are restarting equipment, releasing a door, switching lighting or ventilation, and triggering a siren or strobe.
Capacity and expansion

How many inputs and outputs does one controller support?
The base controller provides 16 programmable inputs and 8 relay outputs. Adding ST317 expansion cards increases this to a maximum of 80 inputs and 40 outputs per controller.
The 16 base inputs are split between eight digital clean-contact optically isolated inputs and eight general-purpose inputs that can be configured as analogue or digital. Each ST317 card adds a further 16 inputs and 8 outputs.
How many expansion cards can be fitted to one controller?
Up to four ST317 expansion cards. If an ST330 telephone card is fitted, three expansion cards can be used.
Fitting more than two expansion cards requires the ST450 expansion ribbon cable, which is supplied with the card.
Can I add hardware to an existing Sentor installation?
Yes. Expansion cards, communications modules, keypads and sensors can be added to an installed controller without replacing it.
This is the central design principle of the platform: a site begins with the capacity it needs and grows by adding cards to the existing controller rather than by replacing the system.
How accurate are the analogue readings?
Analogue inputs are sampled up to 20 times per second, with accuracy better than 0.5%.
The ST025 temperature sensor has a sensing accuracy of ±0.4 °C over a 0–100 °C range, and needs no separate power wiring — the controller supplies it through the same two sensing wires.
Can multiple controllers be linked at one site?
Yes. Each controller has two RS485 ports for connecting multiple controllers together on the same site.
This suits large sites where the point count exceeds one controller’s capacity, or where equipment is distributed across several buildings or rooms.
How many keypads can be connected?
Up to 31 LCD keypad terminals can be connected to one controller over RS485.
The ST007V and ST007H terminals show live device readings — voltages, transmit power, battery status — and act as security keypads with individual user PIN codes, recording who entered a site and when. Having readings available on site removes the need to bring a laptop to view them.
Resilience and offline operation
What happens when a site loses its connection or its power.
Does a Sentor site keep working if it loses its connection?
Yes. The control logic is stored in the controller’s own memory and runs on site, independently of any connection back to base.
Programmed scenarios continue to evaluate readings, operate relays and record events while the link is down. When communications are restored, the logged events are available to be collected. Nothing is lost from the on-board event log in the meantime.
What happens to the site if mains power fails?
The controller can run from a backup battery. An optional 7.2 Ah 12 V sealed lead-acid battery is supported, and the controller includes its own charger for it.
Many sites already have their own battery backup, in which case the controller runs from that and monitors it as a device in its own right — so a failing battery bank raises an alarm before it becomes an outage. Runtime depends on the battery capacity and the site configuration; we can calculate it for your application.
What is scenario programming?
Scenario programming is the if-this-then-that logic you configure in SitePRO and store on the controller. It decides what the site does on its own, without waiting for an instruction from base.
A scenario might state that if mains power fails and the generator has not started within a set period, the controller should trigger an alarm and notify a specific technician. Because the logic lives on the controller, a site can be as simple or as intelligent as the application requires — and it keeps behaving correctly when it is offline.
Communications
How remote sites report back, including sites with no fixed connection.
How does Sentor communicate with remote sites?
Over cellular, ethernet/IP, radio or landline — chosen to suit what is available at each site. Different sites on the same network can use different methods.
The ST30G provides always-on multi-band 3G/4G cellular with a static IP address and SSL encryption. The ST301 network-enables a controller over LAN or internet. The ST303 RF modem serves sites with no cellular coverage, and the ST330 provides landline dial-up where that remains the most reliable option.
Can Sentor work at a site with no internet connection?
Yes. A site can report over radio or a landline where there is no cellular or fixed data service, and continues to monitor and control locally regardless of the link.
This matters for remote agricultural, environmental and infrastructure sites where a fixed connection is unavailable or uneconomic.
How do alarm notifications reach people?
By SMS, email or pager, routed to specific recipients based on the alarm. One alarm can notify one person or hundreds.
With the ST330 telephone card fitted, the system can also place a voice call, announcing the alarm and the device reading in a recorded voice, and offering keypad options so the recipient can respond from a phone.
Integration and protocols
How Sentor fits alongside systems you already run.
Does Sentor integrate with SCADA systems?
Yes. DNP3 is available for utilities and infrastructure applications, allowing Sentor sites to report into an existing SCADA system rather than requiring a separate monitoring platform.
This means new sites can be brought into the monitoring arrangement you already operate, instead of running a second, parallel system alongside it.
What protocols does Sentor support?
SNMP v3 for network management integration, and DNP3 for utilities and infrastructure applications.
If you need Sentor to interoperate with a specific platform or protocol, ask us — integration options depend on the configuration and we would rather confirm than have you assume.
Can Sentor work with equipment already installed at a site?
In most cases, yes. Any device that produces a contact closure, a voltage, a current loop or a temperature output can be wired to a Sentor input without modification.
For access control, the ST352A interfaces with card, proximity, fingerprint and iris readers using the Wiegand standard, which most readers support. Sentor also integrates with Clipsal C-Bus and Honeywell systems already installed in many buildings.
How does Sentor monitor transmitter power at a tower site?
Through the ST505 bi-directional coupler, which is fitted inline on the coaxial antenna cable and measures forward and reflected power in watts or dBm.
The coupler is non-invasive with almost zero insertion loss, and screws in line before or after the combiner, or both. Two take-off points feed the controller’s analogue inputs — one for forward power, one for reflected. The controller calculates a quadratic equation each time the transmitter keys up, giving accurate readings to decimal level. Sentor supplies a calibration utility for commissioning.

Which package does what, and when you need each one.
What is the difference between SitePRO and SenTrend?
SitePRO connects directly to one controller to configure it and view live readings. SenTrend automates polling across multiple sites on a schedule, collecting logs without SitePRO needing to be open.
SenTrend is recommended once you are monitoring more than about five sites. It calls each site in turn, downloads the controller’s memory logs, and moves on to the next, with the collected data exportable to a spreadsheet for analysis.
What does SentorCloud do?
SentorCloud shows your sites on a map and lets you view any site’s readings and alarm status from any internet-connected device — a phone in the field as readily as a desk in the office.
Sites appear as markers on a map; selecting one pans to its location and opens its readings. Data is collected by SenTrend and passed up to the cloud service, so the mapped view stays current without anyone at a workstation.
How are access cards managed across multiple sites?
SenCheck pushes card additions and removals to every site on the network in a single action, so revoking a card does not require visiting each site.
Card codes are held within the controller at each site, meaning access control keeps working when a site is offline. SenCheck synchronises those local lists across the network.

What is covered under the warranty?
Sentor hardware is warranted to operate to its published specifications for 12 months from purchase, serviced on a return-to-reseller basis through your regional dealer.
